Comati family by Merlkir Comati family by Merlkir
400th deviation! Yay! \o/

This is a reconstruction drawing I've done for my MA thesis.

It depicts a family of the comati - Dacian commoners.

I was interested to see Dacians shown carrying their children on their shoulders like this, quite the difference compared to the usual image of a crazy barbarian Dacian with a falx chopping up Romans.
(example of such a depiction is this: [link])

All written histories about the Germanic tribes (even those published recently) have been based upon Roman writings, so, of course, they would usually be depicted killing Romans.

Amazing picture. I love all your stuff.

I love all the texture you put into this piece with your line work, it really brings it to life. I can almost see a bustling noontime marketplace in the background. Very good job at bringing them to life.

How on earth do you make these drawings of yours look so
natural..I mean like it was done in traditional media.
This looks beyond awesome.

:) I mostly use the pencil tool, watercolors and sometimes the "oils" set to rather thin, so it acts almost like gouache.

What settings do you use for pencil? I'm so used to photoshop that I forgot on Artrage.

Oh, looks very nice. I love the incredible detail. Mind if I ask what source(s) you used for the clothing?

Hah, some of the details may indeed be incredible. :)
I used a bunch of sources. Mostly it's Trajan's column and a bunch of other Roman reliefs. The decoration is pure speculation based on patterns known from Dacian neighbouring peoples and more importantly - Romanian folk dress.

The guy's knife, sica and fibula are based on real Dacian finds I've been sent photos of. (and which I made models of in 3D)

This is probably my favorite of the things you've posted. The characters have so much life and personality to them.
