:) I was going through my concept TLD folder and noticed I didn't submit some of my oldest drawings. So...for laughs maybe, here they come ;) 3 and more years old mostly.

Your scanner doesn't really seem horrible. (mine works much worse in comparison)

For the flatness issue - try getting a few pencils of different hardness of the graphite. (like a wider range) If one uses a fairly hard pencil alone, it tends to flatten the image, because your tone range is too narrow.

Also - I would recommend trying to get a hold of a book on drawing and reading through the theory of drawing form in light. Andrew Loomis' books are excellent and I think they're now downloadable online for free.

O_o well. Do you need them RIGHT NOW? :D You can get some when you happen to be in town, right?

Or you can just use one pencil, it's not that big of a deal.

Well do YOU have any advice for drawing with only one pencil?

Not really. If you don't have range of tones, try some other styles. And I don't mean manga or cartoon, just different ways of drawing form, other than smooth shading. (crosshatching, implied lines etc.)

I'm sure a beginner's book would have some pointers about those.
