This is an illustration of a little known monk, pirate and magician (:D true story!) painted for the Medieval Warfare Magazine. (vol II issue 6) The article is called "Eustace the Monk: a medieval pirate" and is written by Sean McGlynn)

Painted entirely in Photoshop, which is unusual for me. I wanted to try it out after a while, if I'd be perhaps faster in it. I was, but there were issues which I don't face in ArtRage, so I went back to it eventually. For some reason, the image was printed in a cropped version, which I'm not terribly happy about, but that happens I guess.

The scene is of Eustace being beheaded after his ship's been captured during the battle of Sandwich.

I never quite realized that he got the chop DURING the battle; I thought he'd have been killed afterwards. Very nice work though. :D

That's a bit of artistic license. :D It's not clear when exactly he was beheaded, iirc most sources say the fighting was mostly over. (mostly being the word I based this on :D Hey, the historian who wrote the article approved of this.)

Amazing, I really like the dynamic feel. :)

But isn't that kettle to late for the beginning of 13th century?
