GtG: 03 - Dragon Pass by Merlkir GtG: 03 - Dragon Pass by Merlkir
"Two rebelling kings, Hofstaring Treeleaper and Kallyr Starbrow, are surrendering to the victorious Lunar - Fazzur Wideread and his ally, Feathered Horse Queen. Lunar soldiers, mages and standard bearers are gloating in the background. Mount Kero Fin looms in the distance."

This is the third of three sample color plates we're releasing to promote the Guide to Glorantha book on Kickstarter:

Take a look at the KS video! It's already funded and we're tearing into the stretch goals.

Much of the equipment is described by the art director, he gives me reference photos and paintings. For this one it was mainly bronze age warriors and Celts for the defeated kings and Greeks, Persians and Scythians for the victorious side.

I like this one a lot! What a melange of historical styles, costumes, weapons and ideas - great one. NOw, if one were to play with it they perhaps I would add a dwarf, perhaps a greyhound, a bear cub or Cheetah (they used them in hunting from horseback until 17th century in Central Asia), and perhaps some very very colorful Eastern (Persian carpet at the feet of the royal couple) . That Celtic helmet with eagle feathers works very well here :) . You could paint anything now I think :)

Heh, considering what dwarves are like in Glorantha, I think they wouldn't want one around for entertainment.

I could've played with it for a while longer, but it already felt a bit crowded, so I decided to move to the other plates. ;)

With such a piece, going for ever was not difficult, you could always add more details, play with light etc, but who is going to pay for it when you work commercially?

Great to see the pain in Kallyr's eyes as she succumbs to Fazzur and Feathered Horse Queen!

Is this the same Kallyr you encounter in the king of dragon pass game?

No. This scene is in 1613 - the KoDP game is set around the founding of the kingdom of Sartar, in the 1470s.

This piece really caught my eyes when I saw it on the Kickstarter page. It conveys the feeling of a historical drawing, like the ones done by Renaissance artists.

(Also, wait the Feathered Horse Queen is in with the Lunars? Man I'm so lost on Third Age Gloranthan lore D: )

All these plates are intended to resemble paintings done by Angus McBride for the Osprey books, but I admit I'm nowhere near as good. Not sure about Renaissance art. Actually, I did get a rather famous painting for reference of this one - depicting Vercingetorix surrendering to Caesar. So some of that awesomeness might've rubbed off. :D

No idea about the Queen. Hey, I just paint this stuff. ;)

Angus Mc Bride is indeed a brilliant illustrator, but make no mistake, you are in his league.  You manage to convey the sentiments of the characters in a masterful way, and that is what draws me to your work.

As I said before I'd love to see an Osprey book illustrated by you.

I know the painting of Vercingetorix surrendering to Caesar. Yet a lot of the awesomeness is in your "Merkiric" style. I love your faces!

Very good job in all these paintings. Getting better and better.

Oh, thank you so much! I doubt Osprey want to hire me any time soon (:D), but I'll have one illustration in the November issue (I think, could be December) of Medieval Warfare Magazine.

Or you can buy Guide to Glorantha. ;)
