GtG: 08 - Fronela by Merlkir GtG: 08 - Fronela by Merlkir
"On a snowy winter field surrounded by fir trees, the Loskalmi general and self-confident warrior mystic Meriatan the Swallow has a tense meeting with the ruthless and barbarous King of Jonatela, Congern the Besieger. Both men are on horseback, accompanied by key companions; beyond them are soldiers. Neither man likes or trusts the other, betrayal is not only feared but expected."

8th colour plate I painted for the Guide to Glorantha book. If you want to know more about the Guide: www.kickstarter.com/projects/2…

I think this is my favorite of your Glorantha plates. The composition and framing are really excellent, and the contrast between the "barbarians" and the civilized Loskalmi is very well done.

What I admire most about your art, though, (and this goes for your Glorantha art as well as everything else you've done) is that you manage to make everything fresh and "new"—by which I mean that I don't look at this plate or that plate and think "Oh! These guys are vikings", or "these guys are feudal knights"; they are their own thing, separate and beyond the cultures and artifacts of our own experience.

Thanks, this one is among my favs too. I think the freshness of it mainly stems from Jeff Richard's art direction, I had extremely detailed art descriptions for every plate. So most pieces of equipment are in fact based on real historical artifacts, but often they're modified and of course the overall impression relies on their specific combination.

I was curious about one thing: both of the Loskalmi have a bird motif, so which one is supposed to be Meriatan the Swallow?

The golden one with the swallow on his helmet. ;) His wizard serves as a standard bearer.

African or European? :P

Thanks, though! I figured it was him since he looks more imposing and martial, but I thought I'd indulge my curiosity (just this once).

Fronelan? ;P

At first the placement of the standards was an accident, but then I thought it could show differences in these cultures. Like the civilized Meriatan has no problem having a standard bearer in his trusted wizard, while Congern bears his own standard, like the barbarian warlord he is. (perhaps not entirely trusting his wife)

I suppose that makes sense. :D

That's a cool bit of insight—Congern's wife does look a little shifty...

If I remember the brief I got correctly, she originally fought against Congern and lost. Or she rather married him instead of losing the war.

I really like your Glorantha illustrations. They look like real people from an unreal world, if that makes sense!
