Oh Noes, A Dragon by Merlkir Oh Noes, A Dragon by Merlkir
This one took me a long time. And it's such naive children fantasy, don't ask me why there are guys wearing sallets and romano-briton helmets. And why they don't have any archers or cavalry.
They're pissed and they feel like walking.

(Also, first dragon in a really long time. Anatomy is screwed, I know.)

edit: I need to thank the Ninjas from the Mountain - namely Jon, Patrick, Jeremy, Andy, Ralph, Scott and my new idol - Socar!

During the time I was painting this I just put all the episodes of NMP in Winamp and played them all on a loop. I survived thanks to your funnies! Thank you!

I have to agree with you on your dragon, but the knights make up for it. Especially the closest one. All of them affected by the fire's glow give a unique effect to what you made. The wings on the dragon are good! I love how translucient they are.

It looks great to me! Very well executed. Especially the colouration and the metal on the armour! I like how you make the background fade away too. :) Heh... and the title made me laugh! :D

Great work. Those men-at-arms near the Dragon have to spread more if they want to escape from the fire lol. Love that painting, man!

This looks great! I love the contrast of the red flags against the green, and the dragon's flames and smoke look awesome. :) The colors all around are great, actually.

I agree that the dragon's anatomy seems a bit off, and I noticed two other things.

- The trees look funny - the trunks are very thick, and they have very small, stunted branches.

- The viewer's eye level appears to be just above the heads of the men in the foreground. If I were to walk out straight across the open air between the soldiers and the castle, I feel like I would end up somewhere just below the base of the castle. However, we can see down into the castle slightly, as though we were just above the level of the walls. I thought I would point that out - something to keep in mind for the future. :)

It is very, very well done.
Just one problem: shouldn't the dragonfire be reflected upon, well, reflective surfaces? Namely the arms, the fortress's wall...

The walls are probably quite far and it does reflect in the weapons. O_o

Those soldiers are the best in this drawing, armour design and all. I like the way you use several types of armours/helmets - I believe that historically it was rare to have one "uniform", and soldiers used gear what they get. Good to know you know more about history when it comes to armour types and such, and era when those were used. It seems more interesting than "now I draw this kind of helmet, what ever it's called". Increases the "practical" look too, not like ordinary fantasy helmet which looks fancy but would be impossible to wear.

Tower shields are great too, I have found it very hard to draw long shields enough - I always draw smaller shields (looks more bucklers than kite/tower shields...) than what I meant at beginning.

Overall picture is good, but if those soldiers before dragons are barely visible, why so much details in dragon? Might be a trick of lighting there, but like said, it's a bit odd looking combination. But those soldiers more than compensate that ;)

The issue of visibility is a tough one. In a normal painting, I would make the dragon much less visible and hazy, the composition would be more dynamic. It's kinda important for the dragon to be detailed here, it's one the few spots where the background shows through the other parts of the website. And the company is called Red Dragon. ;)

As you said, it's a background for a website, so when "criticizing" I should take that aspect into account - especially when I dont have a clue what kind of page it is, and how that picture fits together with other content... :)

Really great, like teh Purdy I am awe. Besides the great looking figures and armour, the pastelly soft background is really nice. Your style is becoming more distinctive and you really seem to be coming into your stride! Please accept another helping of Kudos, cuz you deserve em.
