A piece for a "Mortal Imass" challenge over at the Malazan forums. I didn't spend all that long on this, one evening in fact. I wanted to get the mood right especially, not any super tiny details.
T'Lan Imass are a race from Steven Erikson's books. Does he look like a neanderthal man? No coincidence, the Imass lived hundreds of thousands of years before the events in Erikson's books take place. In order to win a war with a powerful enemy - the Jaghuts, the Imass performed a ritual and put the whole race under a curse - they became undead. This "immortality" was supposed to help them hunt down all the Jaghuts.
It's a very complex and sad story. The man in the picture is Onrack called the Broken. A rather tragic figure, here's some info about him:
I have not read this story but I am incredibly intrigued after seeing your artwork portraying this character who seems to have a lot of complexity to him.
You do an excellent job of giving this depiction depth, emotion, and beauty. Great tundra landscape.
I first saw this one , a quick glance on the Malazan Empire site front page, I thought it amazing. Had to refresh the site maybe a 100 times for I found it again.
Where does it say he's supposed to have amber skin? He's just a regular human neanderthal, maybe the "amber" skin was just a poetic description of the lighting or something.
Yeahm, I'm hoping so. Anyway, I have no idea what type of skin neanderthals had. They could be rather pale too. It doesn't matter, this tone fit my image of the character.

Really adore this one.
