A commissioned piece. It was interesting to work on, because the client wanted to get very (very) close to a composition of a drawing he's found on the internet. Sadly I didn't have as much time to spend on it as I wanted to and I had a terrible headache while painting it. It could've been much better, but meh. It's ok as it is.

are you going to make another where thy break off into the the charge? I've learned that this was the battle that inspired the famous "hoplite run" in the ancient greek olympics.

The only issue I see is that the Spartans should have the uniform "Lambda" on the shields, as this is after the reforms of Lycurgis. The artwork is amazing though and I applaud you on your skill with detail :)

I don't know about that. Certainly, Osprey books for instance aren't infallible, but they clearly show Spartans at the battle of Plataea with various shield designs. And the client (a historical miniatures manufacturer) asked specifically these designs.
I'm glad you like it.

I've specialized in Bronze Age military history in my studies, and there was a transition period after Lycurgis's reforms in which the traditional Greek shield designs were maintained, but around the time of Plataea it was late enough that the Spartan army was relatively uniform. :) A lot of the books that show the "Spartans" with various shield designs are usually mixing up the city-state allies, and it's usually Thespians, Thebans, or Boetians that are actually pictured.
