Sword design 1 by Merlkir Sword design 1 by Merlkir
The first of three sword designs for the portfolio.
I've tried achieving a sense of "alignment" or "aura" just by shapes and materials. It's very easy to slap a skull on a sword and think that makes it look evil. Or spikes. I hate spikes.

Anyway, this one is supposed to be "good".

And yeah, the blade could be longer, but I chose not to make it longer. It's a fantasy sword and it would work as a sword. Yes, a historical longsword would have a longer blade, but this isn't a longsword. ;)

stunning design, but quite useless in combat when compared to the "normal" swords ;).. But that's the prize of it..

It has a slightly similar leaf shaped blade. ;)

Very nice, I always enjoy looking at your weapon/armor designs! I like the way the blade connects to the hilt, with the wings. How'd you do the background, just a nice texture?

Yep, it's a texture I played with a bit.

Nice desing, but I guess it could possibly be a little uncomforteble in hand as the hilt is studded. Looks cool though :)

This is so brilliant! A fantasy sword which does not look like a historical sword with some skulls and drangons but really different. I like it a lot.

i think it could use a few highlights to make it look a bit shinier, but overall it looks pretty good!

It has plenty of highlights, I was just avoiding using pure white. Maybe it'd be good, I'll try later.

just a few speculars is all it needs.

It looks very nice.

I'm personally loving the grip and the pommel. The forte also looks very refined. All in all, very pretty sword.

Interesting design - very nice in fact. :)

Do you collect swords for real? Ever consider getting someone to make a sword you've designed, or help design one?

I've always wanted a sword, but haven't bought any yet. I don't just want a reenactor blunt replica, if I ever buy a sword - it'll be a real sharp one.

Well, they're available, depending on your country's laws! I have one, that's why I asked. :)

...I was in the middle of writing that I don't think this one could actually be made -because you've shown the guard casting with the mid-grip casting as being one seamless piece over the carved wooden grip - when I up and thought of a way to do it.
It would be a royal pain in the ass, and it would take a master to pull it off without damaging the grip, but it could be done.

It would be about as heavy as a whale, too, but by God it would be pretty.

:D Yeah. I was looking at many fantasy sword designs and tried to put some of those ridiculous proportions in there. You know, light elven alloys solve many designer problems. :D

I read somewhere once that in dealing with fantasy metals, just think of mithril as titanium and adamant as vanadium...

Yup, titanium would certainly help out on the heavy-as-a-whale front.
